Hamel Makes Eight Saves as Men's Soccer Duels Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Beavers hit the road for the second time this week, continuing their 2023 SCIAC campaign with an afternoon match against California Lutheran University.

Highlighting the match was the goalkeeping of first-year Ethan Hamel, who entered for the second half and turned away eight shots as the Kingsmen unleashed a barrage of offense on the Caltech side.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 12th minute of the contest, but Etienne Casanova responded with an equalizer three minutes later. The game-tying goal was his ninth of the season, also tying Lawrence Dydell of Whittier College for most goals scored by SCIAC players this season.

Caltech ramped up the offense in the second half with Casanova, Ishaan Mantripragada and Rohan Iyer all making attempts at goal and forcing saves by the Cal Lutheran keeper. The Beavers played a disciplined match with just six fouls called against them compared to the opposition's 17.

Head Coach Duncan Gillis and the Beavers will return home for a Wednesday afternoon tilt against University of Redlands on Oct. 4.
