REDLANDS, Calif. — The Caltech men's swim & dive team topped the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen and the hosting University of Redlands Bulldogs on Saturday in a competitive interconference tri-meet.
The Beavers defeated Redlands by a score of 179-105 and edged out Cal Lutheran, 156-124.
Sophomore Aaban Syed (Laurel, Md. / North County) posted one of the most remarkable results of the day in the 1-meter dive competition, scoring an incredible 298.65 to grab the win and earn the NCAA Regional cut. Earlier this season, the standout
soared into the program's all-time top five in both the 1-meter and 3-meter distances.
In the lanes, the Clatech men opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay.
Senior Naci Keskin (Instanbul, Turkey / Robert College of Instanbul), junior
Evan Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology) senior
Andrew Pasco (Haddonfield, N.J. / Bishop Eustace Prep) and senior
Lucas Abounader (Austin, Tex. / Liberal Arts and Science Academy) swam a 1:35.89 to secure the win.
Zhang claimed first place in the 100-yard breaststroke, tapping the wall at 57.38 seconds to earn first out of 10 total athletes.
Senior
Leo Yang (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) gave the Beavers yet another first-place finish as he tackled the 100-yard freestyle, nabbing a time of 47.60 to beat out 12 other competitors.
Sophomore
Siddhartha Ojha (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) won the 100-yard butterfly in a quick time of 52.39.
Caltech wrapped up the meet with a victory in the 200-yard free relay as Zhang, Yang, junior
Sam Small (Ringwood, U.K. / Ringwood School) and Abounader posted a blazing 1:24.88 to secure the win and put themselves on program's all-time top-ten record board for the event.
The four Beavers beat out the next fastest relay group by 2.66 seconds.
Head coach
Andrew Brabson was pleased with how the group performed as they collected two important wins over SCIAC foes.
"We are pushing through a really tough training block and are swimming quite tired right now," said Brabson. "I was happy with the approach, effort and focus of the team and we will look to start fine-tuning all of the details over the next few weeks. On the diving side, it was great to see Aaban get his first regional cut and work through some new dives."
The squad will now recover and prepare for its Jan. 13 home meet against Whittier College in the Beavers' final home competition of the season with action beginning at 10:30 a.m. Come cheer on the team in person as the program celebrates its graduating seniors; follow the action online at
