Box Score 2 CLAREMONT, Calif - Men's water polo competed against UC Merced and Westcliff in the second day of the 2024 Gary Troyer Tournament, with many standout performances from Caltech players highlighting the weekend.
Caltech first faced off against UC Merced, as junior center Bram Schork (Villanova, Pa. / The Haverford School) had a strong performance including six goals, leading both teams in scoring. As a team, the Beavers recorded 30 shots and their ten goals came from from four different scorers. Sophomore attacker Justin Hong (Pasadena, Calif. / Pasadena) netted a pair of goals in the fourth quarter as Caltech outscored UC Merced 4-3 in the final frame. The other two goals came from sophomore utility Eric Verheyden (Bend, Ore. / Summit), and sophomore utility Axel Haydt (Austin, Texas / Westlake).
After a bit of downtime following the morning contest, Caltech played its fourth game in two days, this time taking on Westcliff University. Schork and Hong led the way again with the former scoring four goals and the latter finding the back of the net twice. Caltech's first four goals all came from Schork, and Hong recorded the fifth and seventh goals of the game for another strong showing. First-year attacker Maxwell Woodruff Vale (Austin, Texas / Liberal Arts and Science Academy) scored his second career goal as a Beaver in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter off an assist from fellow first-year utility Carl Crum (San Carlos, Calif. / Sacred Heart Preparatory).
Despite a powerful offense from Westcliff, the junior goalkeeper Sujit Iyer (Marietta, Ga. / Wheeler) delivered an outstanding performance with 15 saves to keep the Beavers fighting.
