PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's soccer team took on the University of Redlands in a hard-fought battle at North Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Beavers outscored the guests in the second half, but ultimately fell to the Bulldogs by a score of 4-2.
The Beavers found themselves in an early hole due to two quick Bulldogs' goals. Caltech settled in on defense after the goals, however, playing strong in its defensive zone with help from junior keeper
Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter) who made five impact saves in the half to keep the game within reach.
Caltech gained momentum in the offensive zone with its first scoring opportunity coming midway through the half when sophomore midfielder
Ellie Yamada (South Pasadena, Calif. / South Pasadena) fired a shot on goal that was saved by the opposing keeper. Play continued and with under five minutes to play, sophomore midfielder
Marie Choi-Schattle (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) pressured into the Bulldogs' zone and ripped a shot from the box that went just high. The team went into the halftime down 4-0.
The Beavers gathered themselves and came out ready for the second half of action. Just seven minutes into play, Choi-Schattle set up senior forward
Jennifer Solgaard (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) with a one-on-one opportunity and she capitalized, scoring the Beavers' first goal of the match. The Beavers continued to dominate the second half of play, scoring again 12 minutes later; this time it was Choi-Schattle who scored as she fired a close-range putback after a shot from Solgaard bounced off the opposing keeper's hands. It was the team and conference-leading seventh score of the season for the sophomore, who brought the game within two.
Sophomore keeper
Haleigh Gardner (San Ramon, Calif. / California) played an excellent second half for Caltech, saving seven shots and not allowing a single goal. The team outplayed Redlands in the second half but simply ran out of clock before they could complete the comeback.
Head coach Emmy Meyering and the squad will next take on CMS on the road this Saturday, Oct. 12 as they look to pick up their third win of the season. Action kicks off at 11 a.m; follow the action online at
