PASADENA, Calif. — After dropping the three-game series opener on Friday evening, the Caltech baseball team picked up back-to-back victories on Saturday over Providence Christian College. Caltech topped the visiting Sea Beggars 7-2 in the first contest before earning the 10-4 win in the late afternoon.
Sophomore righty
Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, RI / Lake Forest Academy) evened the series with a phenomenal complete-game win in Saturday's early game, pitching eight shutout innings and allowing just two runs in the ninth before striking out the side for a game total of 10 Ks.
Senior
Patrick Donohoe (New York / Bronx School of Science) and rookie
Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School) each scored a couple of runs, Hargenrader going deep in the seventh for a three-run homer.
In the rubber game, a scheduled seven-inning decider, Caltech again prevented the guests from scoring in the early innings while the Beavers attacked early. Junior
Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland) connected for his first of three hits to lead off the bottom of the first inning, eventually coming home after stealing second base and touching the plate on a single by sophomore
Jacob Alderete (Murrieta, Calif. / Murrieta Mesa).
Caltech then erupted in the third for five runs, punctuated by sophomore
Mark Hu's
(San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) RBI double and later an RBI single by junior
Cameron McNamee (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls).
The guests fought back to within two runs by the sixth inning, but Caltech responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the frame, Fishel putting an exclamation point on the day with a two-RBI triple to right field.
Senior
Leo Jenkins (New York / Beacon) started on the mound and struck out seven batters in his four-inning win, McNamee pitched from the fifth inning on to earn a three-inning save.
Head Coach
Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers will return to the North Field for a Saturday doubleheader on Feb. 17 against the University of Puget Sound. First pitches are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
