Men’s Tennis Tests No. 2 WashU

PASADENA, Calif. — The No. 25 Caltech men's tennis team hosted the No. 2 Washington University in St. Louis Bears on Tuesday in an exciting late morning matchup that carried into the afternoon.

Play began with doubles where sophomore Andrew Zabelo (Florham Park, N.J. / Newark Academy) linked with senior Ishaan Kannan (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Horace Mann) for quick 8-4 win on Court 3.

Seconds later, seniors Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) and Daniel Wen (McLean, Va. / Thomas Jefferson HS for Science & Technology) picked up the impressive win in first doubles with an 8-5 victory.

Up 2-1 in the team score, the Beavers fought valiantly across all singles courts with five of the six matches going to a deciding third set.

First-year Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne (Paris / Lycée Jean de La Fontaine) picked up a remarkable win on Court 3 after earning a 6-3 victory in the opening set; the rookie dropped the second set 5-7 before storming back to 6-0 win in the third to take the match. With the result, the rookie stays undefeated as he improves to 5-0 in his collegiate career.

On Court 5, first-year Tejas Ram (Allen, Texas / Allen) fought back from a 2-6 first set to take the second set 6-3 before dropping the third, 4-6.

The Beavers saw another thrilling match on Court 2 as Zabelo took on a high-level opponent. After going down 0-3 to start the set, the Beaver completely turned the match around, winning six of his next seven games to take the first set 6-3. The sophomore dropped the second set 3-6 before losing a lengthy battle in the final set, 6-7 (3).

In fourth singles, Wen cruised to the 6-3 win in the opening set before losing a heartbreaking second set, 6-7 (2) and falling in the third.

Rookie Eric He (Martinsville, N.J. / Bridgewater Raritan) just narrowly lost the first set at 4-6 before taking the second set 7-5 to force a deciding third, where he fell 4-6.
