PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech women's water polo team faced off against the No. 5 Regals of California Lutheran University on Saturday in a home clash at Braun Pool. The contest served as the third conference game of the season for the Beavers, who scored nine times across the four quarters of action. It is the sixth game this year in which Caltech scored nine or more goals.
The Beavers put in the first score of the evening at the 6:05 mark as first-year attacker
Emma Titus (Hood River, Ore. / Hood River Valley) found the back of the net on a powerplay.
The Regals responded with two goals of their own but senior attacker
Emma Gurcan (Istanbul, Turkey / Lincoln HS) soon tied the game up at 2-2 before the end of the period. The senior scored again in the first few minutes of the second quarter as she took advantage of a powerplay situation.
The two Emma's connected with each other just over a minute into the third quarter as Titus sent the ball to Gurcan, who sent the ball past the goalkeeper for the score. Titus picked up her second goal of the contest a few minutes later after receiving the assist from senior defender
Riya Shrivastava (Saratoga, Calif. / Lynbrook).
Caltech earned its third goal in a five-minute span as sophomore attacker
Madelyn Gilbert (Clovis, Calif. / Clovis East) sent a quick shot into the net with 1:52 to go in the third.
Gurcan scored two penalty shot goals in the fourth quarter before senior attacker
Tyler Fox (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) scored on a powerplay situation in the final minute of play.
Gurcan's career-high five goals led all players from both teams; six different Beavers recorded at least one steal.
