Baseball Battles No. 11 La Verne in Weekend Action

PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech baseball team competed in a three-game interconference series over the weekend as the squad faced off against the No. 11 Leopards of the University of La Verne. The Beavers hit the road for Game 1 on Friday in La Verne before returning home for a Saturday doubleheader.

Game 1 saw junior Cameron McNamee (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls) take the mound for a five-inning outing against the nationally-ranked foe, letting up three earned runs and striking out two batters.

Caltech began to find some offense in the latter innings, highlighted by a massive triple to left field from junior center fielder Jack Fishel (Bethesda, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland). Junior Edward Speer (Austin, Texas / Leander) connected for an infield single in the ninth, beating the throw to get on base.

Junior Ryan Wong (Chicago, Ill. / Lane Tech College Prep) closed the game on the bump, letting up one hit and no earned runs in his one inning.

Caltech's seven runs allowed tied La Verne's second-lowest run total in a home game this season.

Game 2 began at 11 a.m. on Saturday at North Field with senior Leo Jenkins (New York, N.Y. / Beacon) starting at pitcher; the hurler let up no earned runs in his 5.2 innings, letting up just five hits and striking out four batters.

Sophomore Jacob Alderete (Murrieta, Calif. / Murrieta Mesa) relieved Jenkins for a scoreless 1.1 innings, letting up just one hit.

McNamee singled to center field in his first at-bat while sophomore designated hitter Sayuj Choudhari (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) picked up his first hit of the day in the fifth as he connected on a ball to the left side.

The two teams returned for the final game of the series at 2:10 p.m. and it proved to be Caltech's strongest showing from the batter's box, as the team recorded six hits across the eight-inning contest.

Fishel led the group with a pair of hits in his four at-bats, singling to center field in the opening frame before singling up the middle in the sixth.

Junior designated hitter Thorsen Kristufek (McKinney, Texas / McKinney), sophomore shortstop Mark Hu (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School), senior second baseman Patrick Donohoe (Laguna Niguel, Calif. / Dana Hills) and Jenkins each posted one hit, with all four players recording three at-bats.

Next up for head coach Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers is a nonconference home matchup against the Providence Christian College Sea Beggars this Tuesday, Mar. 26 at 2 p.m. Come cheer on the team at North Field and follow along online at gocaltech.com/coverage.
