PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech men's tennis team won its third dual match in a row Wednesday afternoon on its home courts, squeezing out a 5-4 match against nationally-ranked George Fox University.
"What an absolute battle on court today, and I think we all saw that those were two of the top teams in the country laying it all on the line," Head Coach
Adam Clark said. "We knew we were going to be in for a massive battle today and the guys responded so well and kept a level head throughout."
The visitors took charge early with match points on Doubles #2 and #3, but the senior duo of
Kyle McCandless () and
Daniel Wen () rallied to take an 8-6 score on Court 1 to slow the guests' momentum.
The Beavers then picked up speed with quick victories on the back courts, first on #5 singles as rookie
Eric He () blazed to a near-flawless 6-0, 6-1 score, follwed on the adjacent court by classmate
Tejas Ram (), who defeated his #6 Singles rival 6-4, 6-3.
Making it four unanswered match points for Caltech was Wen on Court 4, who downed his opponent in matching 6-4 set scores, bringing Caltech within one match point of clinching the team victory.
The visitors picked up a point in Singles #3, so all attention shifted to the top two courts, both of which had split their opening sets. Fortunately, first-year
Constantin Cedillo-Vayson de Pradenne () caught fire when the Beavers needed it most, and his 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 scores on Court 2 sealed the deal for Caltech. It was his tenth straight singles victory of the season and second in #2 Singles so far.
"The connection that this team has with one another is truly incredible and I'm just so proud of all the work they put in," Coach Clark said. "We've got another great test coming up on Friday with a great Colby team and I'm looking forward to seeing how the guys embrace another great opportunity."
