PASADENA, Calif. — Two seniors on the Caltech men's swim & dive team have won academic scholarships, the Institute
announced on Monday.
Senior
Lucas Abounader (Austin, Texas / Liberal Arts and Science Academy) received a Fulbright scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year and will be pursuing graduate school at the University of Padova in Italy, while fellow senior and teammate
Andrew Pasco (Haddonfield, N.J. / Bishop Eustace Prep) was awarded a Schilt Studentship for United States Students from Trinity College, Cambridge.
Abounader will study mathematics while in Italy; he then plans to pursue a PhD in chemistry and data science. The chemistry student has previously conducted research in cheminformatics and data analysis in organic chemistry through an NSF C-CAS Fellowship at MIT; additionally, he has researched organic synthesis under Caltech professor Brian Stoltz and has conducted a summer undergraduate research fellowship (SURF) on iridium-catalyzed reactions of allylic alcohols.
The talented Beaver also excelled in his swimming career at Caltech; the two-time captain currently holds two school records (200 Free Relay, 400 Free Relay) and earned All-SCIAC recognition three times. He appears on the program's all-time Top 10 lists in eight events.
Pasco will pursue an MPhil in industrial systems, manufacture and management before he returns to the States to complete an MS in mechanical engineering at Stanford University. The mechanical engineering major has served as his House President and as a BETA Technologies intern. He is also a member of the Caltech Air and Outer Space Club, contributing design and fabrication work to the LATTICE project.
In the pool, the two-time captain holds the program record in the 200 and 400 IM and appears on the all-time Top 10 lists in eight events.
