PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech baseball team took on the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University this past weekend in a three-game tilt that began in Thousand Oaks and finished at North Field.
The Beavers' most impressive offensive performance came in Game 3 as the team recorded an incredible 16 hits across the nine innings of action. It was the most hits for the Beavers this season when facing an NCAA opponent; the group came just one hit shy of tying their season high.
Sophomore designated hitter
Sayuj Choudhari (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and rookie left fielder
Kailen Hargenrader (Bethesda, Md. / The Maret School) led the team in hits with three a piece, tying the overall game high.
The Beavers' first trip at the plate saw Choudhari single through the right side to score junior center fielder
Jack Fishel (Baltimore, Md. / Boys' Latin School of Maryland), who reached on a single through the left side.
The team went up 2-1 a few minutes later after sophomore shortstop
Brendan Flaherty (Narragansett, R.I. / Lake Forest Academy) walked to score junior first baseman
Cameron McNamee (Great Falls, Mont. / Great Falls); the Beaver reached on a single to shortstop before reaching second on Choudhari's hit; he advanced to third on a single to center field from sophomore right fielder
Austin Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / The Harker School).
It was a five-hit opening frame for the Institute, who also saw a leadoff single from Hargenrader on a ball hit to the second baseman's area.
Caltech scored its third run in the second inning as junior catcher
Edward Speer (Austin, Texas / Leander) came home on a wild pitch after reaching on a single to left centerfield before advancing to third on a single to center field from sophomore third baseman
Mark Hu (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School).
The fifth frame saw McNamee score for the second time after reaching on a walk; the Beavers added one more run in the sixth as Speer scored again with Hu connecting for the RBI single.
McNamee scored for the third time in the eighth inning after singling through the right side as Flaherty made contact with a ball to send his teammate home. A single to shortstop from Hargenrader brought home Choudhari for the Beavers' seventh run of the game.
The Beavers registered just one error in the nine-inning contest; rookie
Joseph Pieper (Palatine, Ill. / Palatine) let up no earned runs in two innings pitched.
Game 2 of the series proved to be a lower-scoring affair, though Caltech ended the contest with 10 hits to Cal Lutheran's eight.
The Kingsmen scored the first run in the top of the fourth though the Beavers answered right back as McNamee singled to third base to bring home Wang, who reached on a bunt.
Hu, McNamee and Hargenrader each registered two hits apiece in four at-bats for each player.
Flaherty put up an excellent performance on the mound, pitching seven innings and letting in two earned runs; he struck out five batters. The Beavers recorded no errors.
Game 1 kicked off at 3 p.m. on the road and it was Hu who produced the most notable performances at the plate. The shortstop went 3-for-3 on the day, connecting for three singles with one run and one RBI as he sent home Jenkins who also reached on a single.
