PASADENA Calif. – Caltech women's soccer hosted the high-flying Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens in a Saturday morning matchup at the North Field.
The visitors unleashed an onslaught of offense throughout the contest, including 12 shots in the first half, none of which reached the back of the net due to junior goalkeeper
Sophia Steven (Broomfield, Colo. / Peak to Peak Charter) who had 8 saves in the opening frame. Steven's first save came just two minutes into the game off a shot from the top of the box with four more in the final 12 minutes of the half, and the teams remained deadlocked at halftime.
Caltech's attack broke through in the 30th minute, earning a corner kick with which sophomore
Aurelia Kuester (San Diego / Canyon Crest Academy) fed classmate
Marie Choi-Schattle (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) for a header attempt that just missed wide. First-year
Anusha Chatha (San Diego / Canyon Crest Academy) managed another attempt later in the second half, as did Choi-Schattle in the waning minutes.
Steven played the full 90 minutes and turned away 14 of Pomona-Pitzer's 23 attempts, representing a new program record for saves in a single match, breaking the previous record of 13 set by Meg Robertson in 2021, Valerie Hetherington in 2019 and Kali Drango in 2018.
Head Coach
Emmy Meyring and the Beavers will have a week to prepare for their next match, hosting the University of La Verne on Saturday, Sep. 28 at 11 a.m. on the North Field.
