PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech men's swim & dive team returned to action Saturday morning in a show of dominance over California Lutheran University and the University of Redlands, handily defeating the SCIAC rivals in the Beavers' first multi-dual meet of 2025. The Beavers downed the Kingsmen by a score of 198 to 81 points and beat the Bulldogs by a score of 192 to 87.
Action kicked off at 10:30 a.m. on the 3-meter springboard, where first-year
Anthony Wang (San Jose, Calif. / Evergreen Valley) set the tone for the team with a first-place performance after scoring 280.50. The rookie later took on the 1-meter competition, where he earned a dominant victory after achieving a score of 305.15.
Caltech won the first swimming event of the day in the 200-yard medley relay as first-years
Aaron Dumas (San Diego / Cathedral Catholic) and
Alvin Zhang (Bellevue, Wash. / Lakeside School) joined forces with sophomore
Marcel Liu (Natick, Mass. / Phillips Academy) and senior
Sam Small (Ringwood, U.K. / Ringwood School). The squad swam a 1:35.50 to finish first among 10 total relay groups — four from Cal Lutheran and three from Redlands in addition to three Caltech teams.
First-year
Sam Xie (Princeton, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School) destroyed the 200-yard butterfly with a winning time of 1:55.15 to beat out seven other athletes; junior
Pierre Zeineddin (Gaithersburg, Md. / Richard Montgomery) finished second overall at 1:58.56.
Xie continued his dominant afternoon in the 100-yard butterfly as the rookie nabbed first among 11 athletes. The standout beat out the 11-athlete field with a time of 50.40 seconds; he finished ahead of the next-fastest finisher — Zeineddin — by 2.26 seconds. Caltech went 1-2-3 in the Redlands matchup as sophomore
Reid Nussbaum (Cohasset, Mass. / Cohasset) placed third (53.95).
For his massive victories, Xie was
awarded SCIAC Swimmer of the Week honors by the conference.
Senior
Evan Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology) won the 14-athlete 50-yard freestyle in 21.18 seconds; he finished ahead of the next-fastest finisher by .70 seconds. Sophomore
Jeffrey Zhou (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Northern) grabbed second in the head-to-head with Cal Lutheran and third overall (21.98).
Junior
Simon Hu (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill) and Small went 1-2 overall in the nine-athlete 200-yard freestyle competition with times of 1:44.58 and 1:46.19, respectively. Junior
Max Chen (Boyds, Md. / Poolesville) finished third in the head-to-head battle with Redlands (1:50.39).
First-year
Thomas Fenton (Lynchburg, Va. / Virginia Episcopal School) took home the overall victory in the 200-yard breaststroke; the rookie beat out the 12-athlete field with a time of 2:09.70. First-year
Daniel Wareham (Shanghai, China / Deerfield Academy) earned second-place points in the head-to-head scoring with Redlands after swimming a 2:14.02 while sophomore
Ryan Lin (Millbrae, Calif. / Stanford Online) finished third in the Redlands matchup at 2:14.55.
Fenton also took home a victory in the head-to-head matchup versus Redlands in the 100-yard breaststroke; the rookie tapped the wall at 59.62 seconds moments before Zhang (Alvin) came through for second (59.81) and Wareham finished to grab third (1:00.29). The trio finished 2-3-4 overall.
Junior
Simon Hu (Clarksville, Md. / River Hill) finished ahead of all athletes in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:57.96 to take the victory while junior
Siddhartha Ojha (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) nabbed runner-up just moments later at 4:58.92.
Liu and Dumas went 1-2 against the Kingsmen in the 100-yard backstroke and 2-3 overall after swimming 54.35 seconds and 54.85 seconds, respectively.
Zhang (Alvin) continued his strong day with an individual victory over Cal Lutheran in the 100-yard freestyle and a second-place finish overall, swimming a 49.16. Zhou followed with a third-place result in both dual meet scores (49.38).
Zhang went on to grab first over Cal Lutheran yet again as he swam the 200-yard IM, tapping the wall at 2:00.68 to finish second overall among 13 athletes. Liu was third in both head-to-head matchups at 2:01.72.
In the 200-yard backstroke competition, Liu earned first place points against Cal Lutheran and second place overall (2:01.79). Xie finished in third (2:01.86).
In the 1000-yard freestyle, Ojha finished first in the head-to-head matchup against Cal Lutheran and second overall; he tapped the wall at 10:21.35.
The Beavers' top relay group in the 400-yard freestyle topped all of Redlands' squads and competing Caltech ones with a time of 3:14.53. Hu and rookie
Athanasios Boutakidis (Pasadena, Calif. / Flintridge Preparatory) linked up with Dumas and Small for the excellent performance; they missed out on the overall victory by just .14 seconds. The Institute's second-fastest team of Ojha, Wareham, Zhou and Zhang (Evan) placed third against both visiting schools (3:16.47).
Next up for head coach
Andrew Brabson and the Beavers is a Saturday, Jan. 11 dual meet on the road at Whittier College. Action begins at 10:30 a.m.
From there, Caltech will focus on another interconference tri-meet as the team takes on Chapman University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10:30 a.m.
