Caltech Men's Soccer defeated the Chapman University Panthers, 1-0, at home Saturday for its first win against the Panthers in program history.
"Today was a real battle against a tough Chapman team," Head Coach Duncan Gillis said. "Luckily our boys were up to the challenge and our seniors led the way."
The victory came on senior day as seniors Etienne Casanova (Saratoga, Calif. / Saratoga), Wilson Duan (Foster City, Calif. / Aragon), Ishaan Mantripragada (Saratoga, Calif. / Harker School) and Jack Myles (Houston, Texas / Bridgeland) were honored prior to the game for their contributions to Caltech soccer over the course of their careers.
"These four young men have done so much for Caltech soccer and I'm very happy for them to get the result their hard work deserves on senior day," Gillis said.
Casanova celebrated senior day in style, providing the lone goal of the contest in an explosive moment in the 36th minute. As sophomore Dean Yao (Philadelphia, Pa. / Germantown Friends) controlled the ball into the attacking third right of the arc, Casanova made a defense-splitting run into the left side of the penalty area. Yao's ball found the feet of Casanova, who made one touch towards the six-yard box before depositing the ball into the bottom right corner for his team-leading 8th goal this season. The assist by Yao was the first of his collegiate career.
Caltech's defense prevented the Panthers from executing their offensive game plan. While the Panthers attempted 17 shots, only one of them was placed on goal. The Beavers placed three shots of their own on frame in the match.
The Beavers' four wins this season are tied for the most amongst SCIAC clubs with two games remaining on the Caltech schedule.
"The seniors and the whole team are still hungry for more as we keep pushing for a place in the SCIAC postseason," Gillis said.
Caltech will travel to Thousand Oaks to face Cal Lutheran Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:00 p.m.
