PASADENA, Calif. — The Caltech Beavers basketball team persisted in its campaign against the tough SCIAC competition, hosting the Chapman Panthers in a Saturday afternoon showdown at Braun Gymnasium.
First-year guard Josh Balami (Woodbury, Minn. / Math and Science Academy) was the only double-digit scorer for the Beavers in this contest. Balami drilled five buckets including two of them from behind the arc. He also knocked down six of his nine attempted free throws, had two defensive rebounds, and started the game for the Beavers.
Matt Cantor (Bayside, N.Y. /Townsend Harris ) came off the bench and finished with 25 minutes of playing time. He scored two buckets in the paint and led the team in rebounds with 10, five of which he got on offense and five of which he got on defense. Stuart Florescu and Andrew Koclanes combined for 10 rebounds. Chase Williamson led the team in assists with two.
Both teams suppressed the fast break and forced the other to play in a traditional half-court offense. Caltech had four fast break points in comparison to Chapman's two.
Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and the Beavers head out east to Voelkel Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 12 to face the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens.
