PASADENA, Calif. – The Caltech women's tennis team faced Whitman College Thursday afternoon and came away with another team victory from outstanding singles play.
First-years
Polaris Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J. / The Pennington School) and
Aoi Kunimoto (San Diego / Rancho Bernardo) made the first statement for the Beavers in a quick 6-2 win in #3 Doubles, extending the pair's unbeaten streak to three matches this season. However, the visiting Blues would come back to win the other two doubles sets and claim the doubles point heading into the break.
From then on, Caltech took off and never looked back, winning five singles matches in a row to seal the team victory. Senior
Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) struck first, dealing a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to her rival in #6 Singles, followed closely by classmate
Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) on Court 3, with a near-perfect 6-1, 6-0 match.
Conceding just three games on her way to victory on Court 5, rookie
Carissa Gerung () raced to a 6-1, 6-2 win, stretching her singles undefeated streak to five matches with the last three in straight sets.
Sophomore
Hannah Ramsperger (Zürich / Realgymnasium Rämibühl Zürich) shut the door on Whitman on Court 4 with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph to earn the decision for Caltech.
Rounding out the day with another singles victory was sophomore
Anna Tanaka on Court 2, splitting her opening sets, and with the team match decided she won the 10-point tiebreak by a 10-6 score.
"Today was a great win that showcased the depth of our team," said Head Coach
Nyssa Peele. "Yoyo and Anna really battled on [singles] 1 and 2 and showed a lot of heart and leadership, but they didn't have to feel any extra pressure since we controlled the matches on the other lines."
"Whitman is an outstanding program that is regularly in the NCAA Tournament and has given us some tough battles in recent years," Peele elaborated. "To beat quality opponents like that, you need a full-team effort where everyone steps up on every court."
The Beavers will face their strongest opponent so far this season on Saturday morning, taking on No. 17 Babson College on the Caltech Tennis Courts.
