PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Water Polo made program history Wednesday night at Braun Pool, winning its first-ever SCIAC game in a 10-8 triumph over University of Redlands.
The first quarter started quickly for the Bulldogs as they scored on their first possession of the game. Two minutes later, the Beavers found themselves in a 2-0 hole, but junior Mia Mutadich (London, U.K. / Notting Hill and Earling) got the Beavers on the board with a powerplay goal, following up with another goal just 90 seconds later to tie the score. Redlands responded with another goal, but with just 32 seconds left in the first quarter, first-year Yolotzin Subdias (Los Angeles / Eagle Rock) netted one to make it a 3-3 tie at the end of the first quarter.
Excellent defensive play dominated the first three minutes of the second quarter until junior Maya Dickson (Atlanta, Ga. / North Atlanta) broke that streak and gave Caltech the lead with a five-meter penalty goal. The lead was short-lived as Redlands would capitalize on their own power play advantage and tie this game up 4-4. In the last 96 seconds of the first half, Caltech would add two more goals, one from Mutadich and the other from sophomore Emma Titus (Hood River, Ore. / Hood River Valley). Caltech looked to carry a two-goal lead into halftime, but the Redlands goalkeeper buried a cross-pool shot at the buzzer to pull the Bulldogs within one.
After the break, the Beavers' relentless defense held the Bulldogs scoreless for the entire third quarter. Dickson scored her second goal of the contest, another penalty shot which she cashed in. Junior Madelyn Gilbert (Clovis, Calif. / Clovis East) added another goal to Caltech's lead with in the waning seconds of the period, and Caltech led 8-5 with one quarter remaining.
Redlands went into the fourth quarter pressing hard and trying to work their way back into this game, but within the first two and a half minutes, the Beavers scored two more goals. Mutadich struck again with her fourth and fifth goals of the contest and gave Caltech a 10-5 advantage with five and a half minutes to go.
The Bulldogs finally found the back of the net again with 5:11 left in regulation — their first goal in nearly 11 minutes to stop a 4-0 Caltech scoring run. Tenacious defense and expert clock management kept Redlands from erasing the Caltech's lead, and the Beavers held on for a 10-8 win for the history books.
Redlands previously held a 22-game win streak over Caltech dating back to 2007, with the Beavers' closest result coming last year in a 14-12 defeat in the 2024 season.
Next up for Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers is another SCIAC battle against No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Saturday at Axelrood Pool in Claremont, Calif., scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
