Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Robert Hollar

No. 18 Caltech Women’s Tennis Wrangles No. 31 Bulldogs

The No 18. Beavers battled No. 31 Redlands in a thrilling matchup Tuesday, coming away with three singles victories as competitive matches unfolded across hardcourts in Pasadena.

First-year Carissa Gerung (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit), senior Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif.  / Mission San Jose), and sophomore Hannah Ramsperger (Zürich / Realgymnasium Rämibühl Zürich) all won their singles matchups against the Bulldogs. Gerung and Ramsperger each won in straight sets (6-3, 6-1, and 7-5, 6-3, respectively) while Arora showed her endurance in a (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) clash.

Gerung was the first to break serve in her singles match, doing so to take a 4-3 lead in the opening set. She dominated the contest from that point onward, winning all but two of the match's remaining games for a brisk and commanding victory. The bioengineering major has won all but two of her singles matches of the season.

Aurora crucially battled back from a break down (2-0) to claim the first set of her singles tilt. All three sets were tightly contested, but she took control with a break to go 5-4 up in the third. Aurora handled business in the ensuing service game to take the contest. The Freemont native has a 6-1 singles record dating back to March 27, a stretch that includes a victory against then-No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Finishing strong became a theme for the Beavers against Redlands, as Ramsperger broke at 3-3 in the second set and never lost another game en route to her singles victory. Ramsperger has a 5-3 record in singles this season and all five of her wins have been in straight sets. In those victories, Ramsperger has surrendered more than three games in a single set just once.

While Redlands took the doubles point, Caltech gave the No. 10-ranked duo in the region a proper scare in the process. Caltech senior Yoyo Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) and sophomore Anna Tanaka (Honolulu, Hawaii. / IMG Academy) broke serve against Redlands' top-ranked pair, and the match required a tiebreaker to determine a victor.
