Caltech Men's Soccer opened the 2025 season with a win today, defeating the Park University, Gilbert (Ariz.) Buccaneers 3-2 in a thrilling home match.
"I'm really happy for the boys to start the season off with a win and a solid effort," Head Coach Duncan Gillis said. "There were a lot of good individual performances, and I thought our organization as a team was pretty good."
Sophomore Matthew Luk (Bioengineering Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) had a career day for the Beavers, amassing a career-high five points and a career-high-tying two goals in the winning effort.
Luk opened the scoring in the 8th minute on a dime of a cross from fellow sophomore Andrew Qin (Cupertino, Calif. / Cupertino) In the second half, Luk provided the service that senior Ishaan Mantripragada (Saratoga, Calif. / Harker School) capitalized on to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Luk then scored the eventual game winner on an unassisted effort in the 66th minute to cap off his career day.
"Plenty to work on still, but I'm excited to build on this performance," Gillis said.
The Beavers next travel to Chicago to face the Illinois Institute of Technology Sept. 5 at 5pm Pacific time.
