Caltech Men's Soccer Shocks Redlands in 3-1 Victory

PASADENA, Calif. The Caltech Men's Soccer team is back in the win column after setting the tone early and holding on for a 3-1 victory over the University of Redlands, snapping the Bulldogs' 41-game win streak against the Beavers dating back to 2002.

The Beavers had no issue getting on the board quickly, striking twice within the first 10 minutes of the game. Senior forward Ishaan Mantripragada opened up the scoring in the eighth minute, assisted by senior midfielder Etienne Casanova. It was Mantripragada's fifth goal of the season, as well as his second goal in the last two games.

Two minutes later, Casanova put the Beavers up 2-0, assisted by junior midfielder Ethan Feng. This goal was Casanova's fourth of the season and Feng's first assist this season.

The energy remained high throughout the rest of the first half, with both teams getting a significant amount of shots. Caltech out-shot the Bulldogs 8-4 in the opening frame.

Redlands ended up out-shooting the Beavers 8-2 in the second half, attempting to answer back to the early Caltech goals. At the start of the 73rd minute, the Bulldogs scored on a penalty kick after drawing a Caltech foul inside the 18-yard box, halving their deficit to just one goal.

Beavers' senior forward Jack Myles worked up a quick response to the penalty kick goal, scoring a brace for his first goal of the season, assisted by sophomore Matthew Luk. The Beavers led 3-1 with just over six minutes to play, and protected the lead to seal the historic victory.

Goalkeepers Ethan Hamel and Alex Crowley made a total of four saves through 90 minutes, with Hamel making one in the first half, and Crowley making three in the second.

"The energy, the intensity, and the execution were all there today," said Men's Soccer Head Coach Duncan Gillis. "While we had some individual moments of brilliance from Ish, ET, and Jack, this was all about the team effort, and both of our goalkeepers put in a huge shift."

The Beavers are hoping to build off this big win this week as they prepare to face Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on the road next Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
