In a thrilling Sunday afternoon game, Caltech Men's Soccer shut out the Concordia Chicago Cougars 3-0 with goals from three different scorers.
Â
After scoring two goals on Friday night against Illinois Tech, senior midfielder
Etienne Casanova opened the scoring 20 minutes into Sunday's game, netting his third of the season and leading the Beavers in shots and goals scored. Casanova's unassisted goal was the only one scored in the first half.
Â
The second half began with a rapid series of saves by Cougars goalkeeper Nethan Gudiel as the Beavers attacked relentlessly after the halftime break. The 46th minute saw back-to-back saves on senior
Ishaan Mantripragada and sophomore
Matthew Luk, with another save on sophomore
Quinn Hartman three minutes later.
Â
The Beavers did end up netting one shortly after, with first-year
Kyler Williams scoring his first goal for Caltech as well as his first of the season. Luk recorded his first assist of the season on the Williams goal.
Â
Caltech finished out the scoring two minutes before the final whistle, with first-year
Gavin Slocum scoring his first of the season, assisted by first-year Aritz Schube.
Â
Overall, the Beavers out-shot the Cougars 16-6, with eight of the Beavers' shots getting on target in comparison to the Cougars' one. Caltech goalkeeper
Alex Crowley did not need to make any saves in the first half, while
Sam Mathews only had to make one save in the second half for Caltech. For Concordia Chicago, Nethan Gudiel made a total of five saves on the Beavers.
Â
The 3-0 win puts Caltech back in the winning column, now 2-1 this season. The Beavers return home Tuesday, Sep. 9 to face Life Pacific University (originally scheduled as an away game).
