LA VERNE, Calif. – Caltech Women's Basketball battled until the end at the University of La Verne on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Kyra Phaychanpheng (Chino Hills, Calif. / Chino Hills) paced the Beavers with a team-high 21 points. The guard earned trips to the free-throw line with ease, converting nine of her 11 foul shots. The Southern California native also made her impact felt on the defensive end, tallying a team second-best three steals.
First-year Isabella Lo (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School) led Caltech in that stat, totaling four swipes within the contest. The 5-4 guard was the only Beaver to play all 40 minutes of the game and added 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting from the field. Sophomore Zeynep Goktepe (Istanbul, Turkey / The MacDuffie School) also had an efficient scoring night, recording 14 points on just nine field-goal attempts. The Istanbul native was especially accurate from beyond the arc, sinking two of four 3-pointers.
The Beavers' strongest play of the night came both at the beginning and end of the matchup. The team shot a combined 60% in the game's bookending periods, which represents a season high. In outscoring the Leopards in the fourth quarter, the Beavers cut a 16-point deficit down to just four points before the home team ultimately prevailed 67-61
On the defensive end, sophomore Louise Scriven (Paraparaumu Beach, New Zealand / Paraparaumu College) blocked four La Verne shots, her fifth game this season recording four or more blocks. The forward is averaging 2.3 blocks per game this season and leads the SCIAC in that figure.
The Beavers return to Braun Gymnasium this Saturday at 4 p.m. to take on Whittier College.
