Caltech Welcomes Tony Cox as Swim & Dive Head Coach

PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Athletics Director Terry Tumey has announced the hire of Tony Cox for the position of Caltech Swim & Dive Head Coach.

"Tony truly understands what it means to have excellence both academically and in the pool," Tumey said. "Caltech has built an amazingly competitive program and we're excited to see where it goes under his leadership."

Cox served as the Head Swim Coach and Director of Operations for TC Falcon Swim Club and Alemany High school since from 2022-26. During that time he developed an individualized approach to training athletes as well as a coaching philosophy centered on stroke mechanics and race strategy. He has elevated numerous swimmers to championship qualifying standards in their age group. At the high school level, he led Alemany to a CIF Division 4 runner-up finish and coached numerous swimmers to multiple program records.

"Leading the Caltech Swimming and Diving program is both humbling and exciting," Cox said. "Caltech is a unique place where academic excellence and athletic achievement go hand in hand. Our student-athletes take on some of the most rigorous academic challenges in the world while still showing up to compete and push themselves every day. Their dedication and resilience inspire me."

As a collegiate competitor, Cox was a member of two NCAA National Champion relay teams at UC Berkeley in 2014. He is also a two-time American record holder. At Cal, he swam under legendary coach Dave Durden, coach of the 2020 U.S. Olympic team.

"I'm incredibly grateful to Terry and the entire Caltech community for their trust and this opportunity. I look forward to building on the program's foundation and helping our swimmers and divers reach their full potential, in the pool and in the classroom," Cox said.

Cox and the Beavers start their season with a home dual meet against Fresno Pacific Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2:00 p.m.
