PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Tennis hosted Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Saturday, and sophomore
Carissa Gerung (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) ended the evening with an exclamation point by defeating the second-ranked Division III singles player in the nation.
Gerung, playing in the first singles position, faced fellow sophomore Rebecca Kong of CMS, claiming the opening set 6-4 before Kong replied with a 7-5 rally in Set 2. With the team dual match already decided, Gerung and Kong squared off in a 10-point tiebreak. Gerung recovered from a two-point deficit to pull into a 6-6 tie and fought ahead to a match point rally at 9-7, but Kong extended the breaker four times before finally falling at the fifth match point. Gerung prevailed by a 14-12 mark.

Caltech has claimed match points in #1 Singles against CMS in three of their last four regular-season contests.

Anna Szczuka (Scotch Plains, N.J. /Â Scotch-Plains Fanwood High School) wowed the crowd against national No. 4 Ananya Sriniketh, claiming a 6-4 opening set before dropping her rival rebutted with a 6-3 second set. The 10-point tiebreak saw eight tied scored before Sriniketh escaped with a 10-8 score.
The Beavers will be back on their home courts again on Tuesday, Mar. 10 to host No. 26 Vassar College.
