PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech Women's Volleyball rode a balanced offense to a dominant 25-4, 25-10, 25-8 victory over the West Coast Baptist Eagles Saturday, Sept. 19 in Braun Gymnasium.
Caltech had 33 kills in the match and spread the wealth offensively. No one player had more than six kills, but four players had at least five. The Beavers committed only eight errors on 62 total attacks for a ridiculous .403 hitting percentage as a team. Senior Alize Bakker (Portland, Ore. / Westview), sophomore Veda Chennupati (Collierville, Tenn. / Collierville High School) and first-year Juniper Schwartzman (Galesburg, Ill. / Galesburg HS) led the squad with six kills each.
The Institute got off to a strong start, opening the first set on an 8-0 run. The Orange and White would later go on a 10-0 run helped by some excellent serves by Schwartzman, making the score 21-2.
Schwartzman again handled the service duties on a 13-0 run in the second set during which Chennupati collected half of her six kills on the night. The third set was decided in much the same fashion.
Junior Ailsa Shen (Calgary, Alberta / Western Canada HS) and first-year Melody Xue (Overland Park, Kan. / Blue Valley HS) were both strong on-serve. The pair tied for a game-high three service aces each while combining for only one service error. As a team, the Beavers collected 11 service aces while committing only three service errors.
Caltech opens SCIAC play on the road against Redlands Thursday Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Redlands, Calif.
