PASADENA, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's tennis team recorded an 8-1 team win over Caltech while the Beavers Rebekah Kitto stayed perfect for the season.
The Sagehens came into the match as the ninth ranked team in the nation.
A key match-up going into the competition was the No. 1 doubles match between regionally ranked foes. The Pomona-Pitzer duo of Kara Wang and Sammy Chao carried a ranking of five into the match while Kitto and Monica Li were 10th. The match was tight early but the Sagehens duo took a 3-2 lead and grew that advantage to 7-2. They eventually closed out that match 8-4.
Pomona-Pitzer won at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by scores of 8-2 and 8-0 respectively.
The top singles matches also featured regionally ranked opponents. The No. 1 singles match saw Kitto rebound for a slow start to post a straight sets win over Jamie Solomon. Down 4-3 in the first set the 25th ranked Kitto won nine of the final 11 games in posting the win over 14th ranked Solomon.
Li and Mae Coyiuto battled in a three-setter at the No. 2 singles position. Coyiuto won the opening set 6-1 but Li, who came into the match ranked 23rd in the west region, rebounded with a 6-4 second set victory. The 22nd ranked Coyiuto won the super tiebreaker 10-7.
The Sagehens won the No. 3 though No. 6 singles matches in straight sets.
