Caltech Tennis takes to the courts this weekend, opening the 2026-27 campaign at The ITA D-III West Regional Championships running from Oct. 2 to Oct. 4. Hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
The tournament represents the first matches played under the direction of Caltech's first-year Men's Tennis Head Coach,
Jason Cook.
Rachel Viollet also returns for her second season at the helm of Caltech Women's Tennis. The tournament consists of three flights each for both the men and women in open singles as well as a one-flight bracket for doubles. All brackets consist of 32 entries with the exception of Women's singles flight C, which has 16. Players who lose their first-round match are transferred to a consolation bracket. The tournament includes numerous colleges and universities, including every SCIAC member school.Â
In Flight A of men's singles,
Soren Ghorai (Woodway Wash. / Eastside Preparatory School) lost his first round match 6-1,6-3 in a tough draw against 5th-seeded Sibi Raja of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Gorai bounced-back with a double-bagel thrashing of Layden Stimmel of Azusa Pacific University in the consolation bracket Friday at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, his tournament came to a close with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Zachary Whittington of Chapman in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.Â
Caltech First-year
Eddie Zhang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) showed tremendous grit in his first match as a Beaver. His 8:30 a.m. flight C opening match against Dylan Duong of Whittier College tuned out to be a marathon, with both sets requiring tiebreaks finishing in a 7-6(7-5), 7-6(7-3) win for Duong. Zhang then fell 6-2, 6-0 to Nicolas Lamas Gonzalez oif Azusa Pacific in the round of 16 of the consolation bracket.Â
Elswhere in flight C, Caltech sophomore
David Jin (San Jose, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty High School) was also matched up against the 5-seed, dropping his match 6-1, 6-1. Jin withdrew from his round of 16 match against Tristan Girodet of Occidental College in the consolation bracket.Â
Back in the main draw, fellow Caltech first-year
Ricky Huang (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements High School) los in the round of 32, 6-3, 6-0 to Juyoung Hong of California Lutheran University. Huang fell 6-1, 6-1 to Elliott Meth of Occidental College in the round of 16 of the consolation bracket.Â
On the women's side starting with flight A, Â Caltech junior
Polaris Hayes (Robbinsville, N.J. / The Pennington School) dropped her opening round match 6-3, 6-3 to Grace Kersenbrock of Pomona-Pitzer. Hayes had a bye into the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, which she withdrew from.Â
In flight B, Caltech junior
Anna Piland (Eastover, N.C. / Cape Fear) was unfortunately forced to withdraw from her opening-round match. Later in the day, Caltech first-year Tvisha Yadiki (Frisco, Texas / Wakeland High School) won 6-1, 6-1 against Sierra Bolanos of Azusa Pacific University. She then defeated Vrishitha Sambathkumar of Redlands, 6-4, 6-3, [10-7]. Yadiki's strong run in the main draw ended in the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Anya Rajan of Cal Lutheran.Â
Elsewhere in the same flight, Caltech first-year
Rhana Kang (Omaha, Neb. / Elkhorn South High School) won her first collegiate tennis match against Chloe Khachadourian of UC Santa Cruz 7-5, 6-2, (10-7). She lost 6-2, 6-1 to Sophia Truong of Redlands in the round of 16 on Friday.
Caltech sophomore
Tara Zhan (Vancouver, British Columbia / David Thompson Secondary) lost her first-round match against Gina Le of Redlands 6-2, 6-4. Zhan defeated Kylie Wellman of Azusa Pacifc 0-6, 6-4, [10-5] in the consolation bracket. Her tournament came to a close with a 6-3, 3-6, [9-11] loss to Ella Fuchs of the University of California Santa Cruz in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.Â
In flight C, Caltech junior
Katelyn Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif. / Trinity Classical Academy) defeated Kloe Cotta of Cal Lutheran 6-3, 6-2. Waugh cruised in her next round as well, defeating Hannah Sonnichsen of Azusa Pacific University 6-3, 6-1. She then defeated Hannah Houwari of Cal Lutheran in the semifinals 6-3, 6-2. Waugh will face Adeline Lai of UC Santa Cruz in the Flight C main-draw final, becoming the first Caltech woman in program history to compete in a main-draw final at ITA West Regionals. The final is set for Sunday, Oct. 4 at 9:00 a.m.Â
In Men's doubles, Jin and Gorai lost their round of 32 match 8-0 against Pomona-Pitzer.Â
On the women's side, Piland and Waugh will team up, also against Pomona-Pitzer. Hayes and Kang formed a doubles pair and defeated a team from Azusa Pacific University 8-2. Hayes and Kang lost in the round of 16, 8-1 to a pair from Pomona-Pitzer.
Zhan and Yadiki teamed up in doubles and also defeated a pair from Azusa Pacifc, 8-5, in their round of 32 match. They lost in the round of 16, 8-0, to a pair from the University of Redlands.Â
