Beavers Face Top Teams at SCIAC Championships

WHITTIER, CA – The Beavers men's tennis came to a close at the 2013 SCIAC Championships hosted by Whittier College on Friday and Saturday.

Caltech faced three teams ranked in the ITA West Region with two of them featuring a national ranking.

#1 ClaremontMuddScripps 5, Caltech 0 (Results)

Highlighting the match for the Beavers was a tight doubles match at the No. 1 spot. Devashish Joshi and Luka Mernik took the Stags duo of Warren Wood and Joe Dorn to the limit but feel 9-7 to the fourth ranked team in the region.

ClaremontMuddScripps dropped just one game in the remaining two doubles matches in grabbing a 3-0 lead in the team match. The top seeded Stags completed their victory with wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots.

#18 Whittier 8, Caltech 1 (Results)

Senior Brian Kim provided Caltech with a win at the No. 6 singles position. Kim took the first-set 7-6 (4) but dropped the second set 6-2 against Charlie Wyatt. A 10-point super tiebreaker would decide the final set and Kim prevailed with an 11-9 win.

Devashish Joshi split sets with Julian Senevirantne at the No. 1 singles position. Looking to knock off the 13th ranked player in the region, Joshi won the first 6-3 but fell in the second set 6-4. In the super tiebreaker Senevirante pulled away late in grabbing a 10-6 win.

Luka Mernik had a similar result as he faced off against Chris Schommer, the region's 23rd ranked player, at the No. 3 singles spot. Mernik lost the first set 6-4 but fought back in the second set as he recorded a 6-3 win. However, Schommer jumped out early in the super tiebreaker for the third set and never looked back in prevailing 10-3.

Occidental 7, Caltech 2 (Results)

The final dual match of the season saw the Beavers pull out two matches.

The No. 1 doubles match went Caltech's way as Devashish Joshi and Luka Mernik won 8-3. Mernik continued his successful day with a singles victory at the No. 3 position.
