Shorthanded Women's Tennis Drops Tight 5-4 Battle at Chapman

PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 15, 2016) – Sophomore Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) won both singles and doubles as shorthanded Caltech women's tennis took a tough 5-4 SCIAC loss to West Region No. 18 Chapman University with junior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) sidelined on Friday afternoon.

Box Score

Wang and sophomore Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) picked up the Beavers' lone doubles point with a narrow 9-8 (4) win at #2 as Caltech was forced to forfeit #3 and fell 8-3 at #1.  Gifted another point via forfeit at #6 singles, Chapman quickly moved within one point of clinching the match with a victory at #1, but Wang posted a pair of 6-1 sets for the win at #4 before the hosts could find that final point, which came at #5 (6-2, 6-3).  The Beavers would take the remaining two matches, with freshman Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) winning her sixth in seven at #2 (7-5, 6-4) and freshman Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) emerging victorious in her seventh straight at #3 (6-1, 2-6, 10-4).

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers host No. 19 University of Redlands (14-6, 6-1) on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 10:00 a.m.
