Men's Tennis Handles Occidental

PASADENA (Mar. 31, 2017) – Sophomore Derik Nguyen (Anaheim, Calif. / Canyon) and the Caltech men's tennis team dispatched visiting Occidental College, 8-1, on Friday to raise its record to 5-6 in 2017 (2-1 SCIAC).

Playing second singles, Nguyen earned a close straight sets victory over Cameron Coe (7-5, 7-6 (7-2)) and also won at second doubles with partner Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell), 8-6 over Coe and Isaiah Bird. The singles victory marks two-in-a-row for Nguyen. Top singles player Ruthwick Pathireddy (Cerritos, Calif. / Whitney), fresh off of debuting in the latest ITA Regional Singles Rankings picked up a routine victory over Trevor Brown, 6-0, 6-2.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will have some time to rest before doing battle with nationally-ranked No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 3 p.m.
