No. 40 Women Down Colorado College for First Win

PASADENA (Feb. 15, 2018) – Thanks to a perfect doubles day and a pair of upperclassmen digging deep for singles points, the 40th-ranked Caltech women's tennis team defeated Colorado College, 7-2, in Thursday's non-conference match.

Results

Junior Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) picked up perhaps the day's most spectacular win at third singles. The junior won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set, forcing her to win a supertiebreaker to clinch a point for the Beavers. With her back against the wall in the face of adversity, Reisler pulled a win out of the back-and-forth tiebreaker 10-7, earning the Beavers her second point of the day. Reisler and doubles partner Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro), who also won at fourth singles, won at second doubles in decisive 8-2 fashion. Caltech's final point of the day acted as the first singles win for freshman Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand), who won at sixth singles 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). The freshman needed three match points, but ultimately closed her opponent out for the straight sets win.

Fronted by Reisler and Wang, the doubles teams staked Caltech to a 3-0 lead, with the Beavers needing just two more wins to secure their first victory of 2018. Junior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond), who would later earn a key win at second singles, teamed with freshman Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) at first doubles for the first time and found success with an 8-6 win. Likewise, sophomore Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) paired with senior Vinci Chen (Austin, Texas / Westwood) for the first time and got the win at third doubles (8-4).

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will look to make it two straight when they return to action for the third match of a seven-match homestand against visiting Brandeis University on Monday, Feb. 19.
