PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 18, 2018) – The Caltech men's tennis team got back into the win column on Monday afternoon when they roared back from a 2-1 deficit to take down Austin College, 7-2. 

Freshmen doubles pair Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) won yet again at first doubles, this time besting Austin's top doubles team, 9-7. Shanker and Wei are now 6-3 on the year and have two wins against ranked doubles teams while also riding a five-match winning streak.

What followed was a Caltech singles onslaught. All six Beavers won matches and put their team over the top. The freshmen Shanker and Wei dominated at first and second singles respectively and set a tone for the matches to follow. Sophomore Miha Valencic (Colleyville, Texas / Grapevine) made his 2018 debut at third singles and defeated his opponent, 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, junior Zixiao Li (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) won his fourth singles match, 6-4, 6-1, and sophomore Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) played up at fifth singles and won 6-3, 6-4. Junior Andre Liu (Novi, Mich. / Novi) made an appearance at sixth singles and capped the day off with a 6-2, 7-5 victory for good measaure. 

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to SCIAC play on Saturday, Mar. 24, when they travel to the University of Redlands for a 10 a.m. match.
