Beavers Come Alive Late Against Redlands

Box Score

PASADENA (Oct. 12, 2019) – The Caltech men's water polo had a late surge but ultimately came up short of catching the University of Redlands at home on Saturday morning.

Senior goalkeeper Bradley Justice (El Cajon, Calif. / Grossmont) had a bounce-back game and got back into double-digit stops with a 12-save performance to keep the Bulldogs within reach for the majority of the game. Early goals from juniors Neil Sanderson (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Winchester) and Steven Csaposs (Davis, Calif. / Davis) provided the Beavers with an early spark that carried across the game's first two periods.

After making a series of adjustments, Redlands began to pull away in the third period, though the Beavers managed to outscore the Bulldogs in the fourth. Csaposs maintained a strong presence throughout the game, scoring four times to bring his team-leading scoring total to 41 on the year. Outside of Csaposs and Sanderson, four other players scored for Caltech. Freshman James Bowden (Los Angeles, Calif. / Granada Hills Charter) gave his team some momentum with a late goal in the second quarter, while classmate Max Bricken (Portland, Ore. / Westview) achieved his tally in the fourth. Freshman Matthew Hajjar (San Jose, Calif. / The Harker School), meanwhile ended a five-game scoring drought and sophomore Alex Wang (Saratoga, Calif. / The Harker School) scored for the second time in the previous four contests. Five different players registered assists, including goalkeeper Justice who also paced the defense with four steals.

Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will have a quick turnaround and look to right the ship when they host Washington & Jefferson College on Monday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
