PASADENA (Mar. 13, 2019) – Sophomore James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) kept his season-opening undefeated streak alive with his fifth singles win as 29th-ranked Caltech men's tennis fell to 26th-ranked Skidmore College on Wednesday afternoon.
Wei outlasted his opponent in the first set at second singles, 6-4, before closing it out with a second-set swee. Although Wei earned the Beavers' lone point, Caltech played the match extremely close and was unfortunate to end up on the short end of a third-set defeat and two super tiebreakers.
Classmate Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) took an early 6-1 lead at first singles before his opponent, who matches Shanker's 19th-ranked regional billing in the Northeast, rallied to take the final two sets while sophomore Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) and freshman Patryk Kozlowski (Irvine, Calif. / University High) went down in superbreakers at courts five (7-5, 4-6, 6-10) and six (6-1, 4-6, 12-14). This all followed a doubles sweep, where Shanker and Wei were defeated by a single break at 8-6 in the closest match.
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers host their third of six nationally ranked opponents of this stretch of the season in 22nd-ranked Tufts University on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 2 p.m.
