Box Score PASADENA (Mar. 6, 2020) – The 30th-ranked Caltech women's tennis team, led by sophomore Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy), fought to the finish against No. 15 University of Mary Washington, but ultimately came up short to the Eagles, 5-4, on Friday afternoon.
Tifrea and junior doubles partner Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) gave the Beavers something to be excited about earlier in the day when they beat the Eagles' top doubles team, 8-3, one that is regionally ranked. The Beavers also came a mere two points away from securing a second doubles victory, one that would have given them a considerable amount of momentum leading into the rest of the day. Sophomores Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) and Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) fell to Mary Washington's second doubles team, 8-7 (5), one that is also ranked in the Eagles' respective region.
Caltech went on to split singles matches with Mary Washington, with Tifrea being the big winner at first singles. The junior pulled out a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win in the longest match of the day with several games going reaching deuce in the third set. Yu, the Beavers' second singles player, also toughed out a victory, beating the nation's 19th-ranked player 6-3, 6-3. The third singles victory of the day belonged to junior Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand), who handled her opponent, 6-4, 6-2.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will have another chance to get back in the win column when they take on No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, Mar. 8 on neutral ground.
