Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. (Oct. 9, 2021) - Caltech women's soccer jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on another goal by senior
Schuyler Dick (Hudson, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) to take a halftime lead over the Poets before the hosts rallied for a 3-1 win.
Dick tallied her fourth goal of the season in just the 16th minute, allowing the Caltech defense to buckle down for the remainder of the half in which junior goalkeeper
Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) needed to make only one save thanks to the steady play in front of her. She would go on to make another seven saves in the second half, though the lead was short-lived with Whittier tying the match in the first four minutes of the second half. The Poets continued pressing immediately for a go-ahead score, but Fine turned four straight shots away in the next four minutes after the equalizer and held firm through the 72nd minute until the Beavers were credited with an own goal.
Freshman midfielder
Juni Polansky (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and senior midfielder
Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) each took shots on goal that were turned aside in the Beavers' effort to equalize. A late inurance goal in the 88th minute eliminated hopes of departing with a draw, though Head Coach Ellery Gould's squad left with some regained confidence after the impressive display.
Gould and the Beavers will regroup quickly as they seek their first conference win when they host last week's rain-postponed game against Redlands at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11.
