Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2021) – Senior Schuyler Dick (Hudson, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) scored an exquisite free kick as the new-look Caltech women's soccer team had the honor of playing the first intercollegiate competition in Pasadena since March of 2020 on Wednesday morning.
Dick and the Beavers posed a constant threat to push upfield against visiting University of Saint Katherine but fell, 2-1, in heartbreaking fashion with the Firebirds notching goals in the first and 87th minutes. The senior's effort on a free kick from 20 yards drew gasps before ensuing cheers from the crowd when she calmly jogged through the shot, lofting it with a slight curl into the upper right corner of the net well beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Junior Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) made several impressive stops, including two particular diving efforts where she soared clear across the face of goal to deny sharp attempts by USK, for a total of nine saves. Senior Zoe Rock (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and rookie Katherine Marquis (Tewksbury, Mass. / Phillips Acad. Andover) each notched a pair of efforts on goal, while freshman Juni Polansky (Baltimore, Md. / Baltimore Poly) showcased a number of clever on-balls moves in the midfield and the center back duo of junior Catherine Kauber (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville) and sophomore Cameron Scantlin (San Diego, Calif. / Valhalla) formed a reliably stout pairing.
Head Coach Ellery Gould and the Beavers travel to SOKA University on Saturday, Sept. 4.
