Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. (Sep. 14, 2021) – Sophomore Claire Perhach (Carlsbad, Calif. / Sage Creek) came off the bench to highlight the stat sheet in Caltech's first-ever meeting with Vanguard University on Tuesday night.
The Beavers took command of the match early, opening the first set 3-0, followed by a five-point run that forced the Lions to call timeout with a 10-4 score. Vanguard would later pull ahead, but Caltech responded with another six-point run with Perhach hitting a pair of kills. She was locked on-target and hitting efficiently all night, recording 13 kills and a .310 hitting percentage.
Vanguard took an early lead in the second set, but the Beavers fought back to tie it up and storm ahead to an 11-8 lead, and later came from behind again to tie the score at 21-21. The Lions would prevail and take the following two sets despite Caltech hitting.344 as a team in the third frame.
Sophomore Angel Wang (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Pine Creek) handled all kinds of attacks from Vanguard hitters for a career-high 14 digs in the match. On the offensive side, she served up three aces and had four assists.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers return home for a doubleheader this Saturday, Sept. 18, hosting Mills College at 11 a.m. and West Coast Baptist College at 3 p.m.
