Women's Soccer Faces Toughest Test at No. 17 Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2021) – Caltech women's soccer faced its toughest test of the season at No. 17 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday morning, surrendering eight goals while getting a look at the conference's best following the program's first-ever win over a SCIAC opponent against the University of La Verne two weeks ago.

The conference foes went toe-to-toe in the opening minutes, with rookie Shelby Scott (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) answering a ninth-minute Sagehens goal with a sharp strike of her own that was saved – one of just 10 shots on goal Pomona-Pitzer have allowed all season.

The hosts began their slew of substitutions at the 25th-minute mark and the overwhelming number of fresh legs soon made its mark with an insurance goal in the 26th minute, with Caltech unable to keep pace with the Sagehens from there. Juniors Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) and Valerie Hetherington (Bozeman, Mont. / Deerfield Acad.) combined to make eight saves across the contest, with the former notching six over the first half.

Head Coach Ellery Gould and the Beavers will challenge Occidental College in Eagle Rock on Wednesday night.
