Box Score ALISO VIEJO, Calif. (Sept. 4, 2021) – Senior Schuyler Dick (Hudson, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) fired Caltech women's soccer to its first win under Head Coach Ellery Gould from the spot for her second goal in as many games to open the season in a 1-0 victory over Soka University on Saturday morning.
The goalkeeping duo of sophomore Megan Robertson (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) and junior Eve Fine (Locust Valley, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) registered the combined shutout, with Robertson called upon to make four saves in the first half while Fine expertly controlled the box and distributed the ball well. Dick registered the eventual winner on a penalty kick just seconds before the halftime whistle, giving the Beavers their first win in three years thanks in large part to significant upperclassman leadership, particularly in the waning moments to seal the win.
Sophomore Kathryn Thompson (Roseville, Calif. / Granite Bay) stood out with her tough, physical play throughout the midfield while freshman Shelby Scott (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) registered some of the bigger offensive threats from open play, notably sending a strong cross just wide that had the keeper beat regardless. The starting back line of junior Catherine Kauber (Pleasantville, N.Y. / Pleasantville), rookies Cameron Scantlin (San Diego, Calif. / Valhalla) and Georgia Malueg (Miami, Fla. / Palmer Trinity School) and senior Jocelyn Kho (Temple City, Calif. / Temple City) turned in another stout performance and many of the freshmen and sophomores showed increased composure already in just their second career appearance.
Gould and the Beavers will look to ride the momentum when they host San Diego Christian College on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. following the men's game.
