Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2022) – Caltech women's tennis notched its second win of the season in a 6-3 victory over perennially ranked Brandeis University on Monday afternoon.
The visitors from Waltham, Mass. were looking for warm weather in their first outdoor match of the season, but were met with a cold front and hot Caltech squad that quashed the Owls' hopes of picking up a significant early-season victory.
Leading the way for the Beavers, senior Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy), playing in the first position, had a great battle in her singles match. Easily winning the first set, she grinded opposite her opponent and competed vigorously in the three-set loss, losing sets two and three, 6-4. Sophomore Emily Zhang handily won her match playing in the second position. Senior Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) made a terrific comeback, overcoming a love set in the first to rally and win a 10-8 superbreaker. Freshmen Riti Agarwal and Yochana Benchetrit (Toronto, Canada / St. Clements School) were dominant in playing the fourth and fifth slots, sweeping their opponents. It was Benchetrit's second collegiate dual match win on Monday afternoon, providing a terrific start to her career.
Sophomore Athena Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Anika Arora were dominant in their doubles match, taking down their opponent 8-1 playing as the third doubles pairing for a kew early win.
The Beavers return to action when they host the Tigers of Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas on Friday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. on the Caltech campus.
