PASADENA, Calif. (March 13, 2022) – The No. 23 Caltech women's tennis team fell short of a victory in yesterday's home match, losing 4-5 against the No. 21 Washington University in St. Louis.
At doubles, senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos / Gretchen Whitney) and Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) picked up the Beavers' first points of the match with an 8-3 win over Hannah Johnston and Carolyn Tsung at third doubles.
At singles, Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1 at second singles, while freshman Riti Agarwal (Bangalore, India / Inventure Academy) forced a tiebreaker at fourth singles to defeat her opponent 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. At fifth singles, freshman Yoyo Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) won her match with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat over her opponent.
The Beavers started to pull ahead with a 4-2 lead during singles but would ultimately fall to the Bears in tiebreaker sets. Senior Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) battled with her opponent at first singles and forced a third set, but unfortunately lost 6-7, 6-3, 4-6. Similarly, senior Jen Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) came back against her opponent at third singles, but fell 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, while Hyun lost 4-6, 6-3, 2-6 at sixth singles.
The Beavers are back in action on Friday, March 18, at 2:00pm when they host Babson College at home.
