Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 18, 2022) – Both teams call themselves the Beavers, but the Caltech Women's Tennis team can call themselves the victors today after defeating Babson College by a commanding 7-2 score.
In a pair of grinding doubles battles, the Caltech duo of sophomore Athena Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) put the west coast Beavers on the board with an 8-5 win. In the third doubles matchup, senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) and freshman Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) required a tiebreaker but finally emerged with an 8-7 (6-0) win to give Caltech a 2-1 match advantage heading into the singles session.
In singles play, sophomore Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) soundly defeated her Babson opponent on court two, 6-2, 6-1, followed closely by freshman Riti Agarwal (Bangalore, India / Inventure Academy) on court three, who picked up a solid 6-3, 6-2 win.
Freshman Yochana Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) won convincingly in fourth singles with a 6-1, 6-2 score, and Hyun padded Caltech's match score with her second win of the day, 6-0, 7-5. Finally, junior Nina Solovyeva (Houston, Texas / Memorial) dominated on court six with a near-flawless 6-1, 6-0 win, giving Caltech a 7-2 bounce-back win after dropping a close one against Washington University (Mo.) last weekend.
The No. 23 Caltech Beavers are back in action for three home matches next week, beginning on Mar. 21 for a 2 p.m. tilt against MIT. Follow all the action at GoCaltech.com
