Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 25, 2022) - The No. 22 Caltech women's tennis team faced the No. 32 Colby College Mules on a warm Friday afternoon at home. After a competitive, back-and-forth match, the Beavers unfortunately fell to the Mules 4-5.
In doubles competition, senior Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and sophomore Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) were defeated 2-8 on court one, while sophomore Athena Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) lost their match 5-8 at court two. Nevertheless, senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) and freshman Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) dominated their opponents at court three with an 8-1 win, denying the Mules a sweep in doubels.
Heading into singles play, the Beavers were down 1-2 and were looking to pull ahead in the coming matches. While Tifrea fell 0-6, 2-6 at court one, Zhang picked up her teammate at court two, forcing a third match and securing the 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win. Senior Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) was bested by her opponent 6-0, 3-0, 99-0 at court three, but freshman Yoyo Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) kept the Beavers in the running with an easy 6-2, 6-0 win at court four. Hyun came back after losing her first set at court five, however the sophomore was unable to pull off the win and fell 6-7 (0-5), 6-2, 4-6. At court six, junior Nina Solovyeva (Houston, Texas / Memorial) defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-4, but the Beavers were down a set and would lose the overall match 4-5.
