PASADENA, Calif. (March 9, 2022) – The No. 23 Caltech Women's Tennis team notched its fourth consecutive win with a 9-0 sweep over No. 35 Vassar College on Wednesday afternoon at home. The Beavers handed Vassar their first dual match loss for the season and snapped a six-match win streak.
Opening with a strong doubles effort in first position, senior Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and sophomore Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) posted an 8-5 victory over the Brewers. Court two saw sophomore Athena Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) best their opponents 8-4, while senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) and freshman Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) notched an 8-3 win over the Brewers on court three.
The Beavers continued to dominate in singles actions, starting off with a 6-0, 6-1 victory by Tifrea at the first flight, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 win by Zhang on court two. After being down a set on court three, freshman Riti Agarwal (Bangalore, India / Inventure Academy) battled back and ultimately won the match 4-6, 7-5, 10-2 in a forced tiebreaker. At court four, freshman Yochana Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) notched a 6-3, 6-0 win, while Hyun bested her opponent with a 6-4, 6-3 win at court five. Action rounded out at court six as junior Nina Solovyeva (Houston, Texas / Memorial) secured the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
