Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 1, 2022) – Caltech Women's Tennis kicked off their 2022 SCIAC campaign today, hosting the nationally third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas.
The Beavers, ranked fifth in the ITA West Region, put up some impressive fights against the visitors on a cool Friday afternoon with a slight breeze from the northern side of the nets.
Senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) and freshman Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) battled to win six sets against their CMS opponents in third doubles. On court one, sophomore Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) and freshman Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) took five sets from Gabby Lee and Sydney Lee, the eighth-ranked pair in the region.
In the singles session, senior Anna Tifrea won four games in her first set against regional No. 3 Crystal Juan, and on court two, Zhang rebounded after dropping her first set to regional No. 5 Sydney Lee, coming back with a 6-0 win in the second set. Freshman Riti Agarwal (Bangalore, India / Inventure Academy) won seven games in her court three matchup against regional No. 18 Audrey Yoon, and in sixth singles, junior Nina Solovyeva (Houston, Texas / Memorial) bounced back from a first set loss to grind out a 7-6 (0) win in the second set.
Caltech hits the road Saturday to face SCIAC rival Chapman University, with the action starting at 10 a.m.
