Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 15, 2022) - On a brilliant spring afternoon, the Caltech men's tennis program welcomed in the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, the nation's number 10 ranked DIII program, and the West region's third rated squad.
Buoyed by an 8-7 win by
Rishi Gundakaram (Wyoming, Del. / Caesar Rodney) and
John Kim (Cupertino, Calif. / Menlo School) in their #3 Doubles match, the Beavers snared a point from the three awarded in doubles play, and propelled Caltech into the six singles matches down only one, trailing 2-1.
While the only Caltech player to win his singles match was
Kyle McCandless (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington), the number 18 ranked singles player in the west region who was pushed in his 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 victory in No. 2 singles, it's not a hyperbole to state that all other singles matches could have gone the Beavers' way. Out of six singles matches, five of them went to a third set with Pomona-Pitzer claiming four of the five of those extra frame matches and taking the match 7-2. This demonstrates how much parity there is in the SCIAC and how competitive Caltech is every time that they take the court.
With no time to dwell on what could have been, the 12-6 (3-2 SCIAC) No. 15 Beavers are back in action on Saturday, April 16 when they host the Tigers of Occidental College, the team the Beavers are tied with in the conference standings. The match will take place at 10:00 am on the Caltech campus. To follow this match, and all Caltech Athletics events and teams, please visit
