No. 22 Women's Tennis Claws Way Past No. 37 Chapman

Box Score
ORANGE, Calif. (Apr. 2, 2022) - Having faced four, highly nationally ranked opponents over the past two weeks, the No. 22 Beavers travelled to Orange to take on the 37th ranked Leopards of Chapman University on Saturday.  The recent, close matches and hard-fought competition served the Beavers well as they came out victorious 6-3, leveling their overall record at 6-6 (1-1 SCIAC).

Providing the leadership for the squad was the effort of senior Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy).  While she and doubles partner Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) are the 14th ranked doubles pair in the West Region, Tifrea was paired with sophomore Athena Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) in the number two doubles slot on Saturday, and the pairing won their match, 8-4.  Tifrea then faced off on court one in singles action against the #16 ranked singles player in the West Region, Aliya Allyn of Chapman.  Tifrea prevailed 7-5, 6-3 to earn her second point of the match for the Beavers while also setting the tone for the balance of the day.

As impressive as Tifrea's performance was, no player was more dominant on the day than senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney).   Teamed with freshman Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth), Hyun and Patel playing in the 3's position of doubles, dominated their opponents, sweeping their doubles match 8-0.  If that wasn't enough, Hyun then triumphed in her singles match, 6-0, 6-0, rounding out a perfect effort on the afternoon, winning 20 games and losing zero in the Caltech victory.

The Beavers will be back in action on Friday, April 8 when they travel to take on the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands.  To follow the women's tennis team and the entire Caltech Athletics program, log onto GoCaltech.com
