Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 30, 2022) – Caltech Women's Tennis hosted the Whittier College Poets in the final dual match of the 2021-22 season, sending off the graduating seniors with a 9-0 triumph over their SCIAC rival.
The pre-match Senior Day ceremony honored seniors Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney), Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy), and Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant), who accounted for 19 singles and doubles wins over the course of the season, including 14 in conference play. Hyun and Tifrea prolonged the festivities by dominating on their respective courts for one last time at home.
The Beavers' first point of the day came from second doubles, as freshman Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) and sophomore Athena Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) powered their way to an 8-1 win, followed shortly in third doubles by Hyun and freshman Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth), who defeated their opposing duo 8-2. The first doubles matchup proved to be the biggest test of the day for Caltech, but the pairing of Tifrea and sophomore Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) ultimately prevailed with an 8-6 tally and a commanding 3-0 match lead.
From there, the Beavers put it in cruise control and blasted through the singles session, as Tifrea claimed the victory in first doubles while Zhang notched the match-clinching point in second doubles, both by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Zhang's win was her 11th of the season in the second singles position.
Hyun coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win on court four for her fifth singles victory over SCIAC foes, and junior Nina Solovyeva (Houston, Texas / Memorial) picked up her tenth of the year and fourth in SCIAC play with a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Freshman Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) closed out court six by a 6-0, 6-2 margin, and freshman Yochana Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements) ended the match and finalized the sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 score in the third position. The victory was Yochana's 14th of the year in singles play, a team high.
The victory secured winning records for the Beavers, 9-8 overall and 4-3 in conference, good enough for fourth place in the final standings and a spot in the SCIAC Championships semifinals on Friday, May 6. Check www.GoCaltech.com for more information as it becomes available.
