Box Score PASADENA, Calif. (Apr. 9, 2022) – Caltech Women's Tennis bounced back after Friday's close loss, soundly defeating California Lutheran University in a powerful display Saturday morning on their home courts.
The Beavers played with determination through the doubles session and came away with a couple of wins and the lead in the match. Senior Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and sophomore Athena Kolli (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) picked up a point in second doubles with an 8-4 win, and in the third doubles matchup it was senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) and freshman Payal Patel (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) also defeating their Regals opponents by an 8-4 score.
Then it was time for singles play, and Caltech showed no mercy on the path to victory. Freshman Anika Arora (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) was the first Beaver to finish, winning 6-1, 6-2 on Court Six. Following her closely was freshman Yochana Benchetrit (Toronto, Ont. / St. Clements), who played a near-flawless 6-1, 6-0 match in her first appearance of the year in the third position.
Senior Michelle Hyun (Cerritos, Calif. / Gretchen Whitney) played her debut in the fourth singles spot and clinched the match for Caltech with her 6-3, 6-1 win. Junior Nina Solovyeva (Houston, Texas / Memorial) later padded the Beavers' lead with a 6-1, 6-2 win in fifth doubles. Benchetrit, Hyun, and Solovyeva have each won their last three singles matches in a row.
Finally, sophomore Emily Zhang (Sharon, Mass. / Sharon) finished off her Court Two rival 6-3, 6-0 for the Beavers' seventh point.
Caltech will travel to face the red-hot Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on April 15.
